TRAVIÈS, Charles-Joseph Traviés de Villers (1804-1859)

Traviès nasceu na Suíça em 1804 mas naturalizou-se francês.
Foi aluno de François-Joseph Heim e da escola de Belas-Artes, tendo iniciado a sua carreira como pintor, mas sem qualquer tipo de sucesso. No entanto, acabou por se tornar conhecido quando enveredou pela área da caricatura. Foi colaborador dos jornais La Caricature e Le Charivari, dirigidos por Charles Philipon. É nesta ocasião (1832) que cria a personagem Mayeux (por vezes Mahieux), um barrigudo que encarna todos os defeitos da burguesia em Louis-Philippe. Todos os grandes caricaturistas parisienses da época reproduziram a figura de Mayeux: Daumier, Grandville, Robillard, Delaporte. O próprio Balzac escreveu, sob pseudónimo, dois artigos: M. Mahieux au bal de l'Opéra e M. Mahieux en société.
A Lei de 9 de Setembro de 1835 proibiu a caricatura política, e Traviès, à semelhança de outros seus colegas, dedicou-se ao retrato de costumes sociais, interessando-se pelos comportamentos populares e pelas profissões menores. Ocasionalmente, ilustrou romances de Balzac.

Traviès was born in Switzerland in 1804 but he naturalised French.
He was a student of François-Joseph Heim and of the school of Fine-Arts, he started his career as a painter but he lacked success. Nevertheless, he became famous when he started doing caricatures. He worked for the newspapers La Caricature and Le Charivari, both edited by Charles Philipon. That’s when he creates (1832) Mayeux (aka Mahieux), a potbellied figure that incorporates all the flaws of the bourgeoisie in Louis-Philippe. All the great Parisian caricaturists of that time also took the figure of Mayeux: in their work Daumier, Grandville, Robillard, Delaporte. Balzac, himself, wrote, under pseudonym, two articles: M. Mahieux au bal de l'Opéra and M. Mahieux en société.
The Law of September 9th, 1835 banished the political caricature, and Traviès, like other fellow caricaturists, devoted himself to the portrait of social habits, getting interested by common behaviours and by minor professions. On ocasions, he illustrated Balzac’s novels.
