Thomas Rowlandson nasceu em Londres em Julho de 1756. Thomas aprendeu a desenhar ainda antes de saber escrever e por volta dos 10 anos passava todo o seu tempo livre a desenhar. Depois de ter frequentado Eton ele tornou-se aluno da Real Academia. Aos 16 anos ele partiu para França onde passou 2 anos numa escola de desenho em Paris.
Em 1777 Rowlandson abriu um estúdio em Wardour Street onde se estabeleceu como pintor de retratos."
Na década de 1780 Rowlandson pintou menos retratos e concentrou-se no desenho. Rowlandson teve trabalhos publicados em jornais como o English Review e The Poetical Magazine. Rowlandson também ilustrou livros, incluindo aqueles escritos por Henry Fielding, Oliver Goldsmith e Laurence Sterne. Rowlandson também trabalhou com Tobias George Smollett, cujos livros radicais levaram a que ele fosse mandado para a prisão por difamação. Alguns dos cartoons politicos de Rowlandson também lhe trouxeram problemas e ele foi acusado pelos críticos de ser "grosseiro e indelicado".

Thomas Rowlandson was born in London in July 1756. Thomas learnt to draw before he could write and by the time he was ten he was spending all his free time drawing. After attending Eton he became a student at the Royal Academy. At sixteen he left for France where he spent two years at a drawing school in Paris.
In 1777 Rowlandson opened a studio in Wardour Street where he established himself as a portrait painter.
In the 1780s Rowlandson painted fewer portraits and tended to concentrate on drawing. Rowlandson had his work published in journals such as the English Review and The Poetical Magazine. Rowlandson also illustrated books, including those written by Henry Fielding, Oliver Goldsmith and Laurence Sterne. Rowlandson also worked with Tobias George Smollett, whose radical books resulted in him being sent to prison for defamation. Some of Rowlandson's political cartoons also got him in trouble and he was accused by his critics of being "coarse and indelicate".
