Nascido em Londres,
Leech estudou em Charterhouse e, mais tarde, estudou medicina, mas tendo
publicado, aos 18 anos, Etchings and Sketchings, virou-se para a arte. A partir
de 1841 ele publicou centenas de sketches sobre a vida da classe média e
cartoons politicos no Punch, e também contribuiu com gravuras de madeira para o
Illustrated London News (1856) e Once a Week (1859 – 62).
Para além disto, Leech também ilustrou vários livros, incluindo Christmas Carol
de Charles Dickens’ e as novelas desportivas de Robert Smith Surtees. Ele foi,
também, o autor de várias series litografadas, em particular: Portraits of the
Children of the Mobility (1841).

Born in London,
Leech was educated at Charterhouse and then he studied
medicine, but having published, at the age of 18, Etchings
and Sketchings, he turned to art. From 1841 he published
hundreds of sketches of middle class life and political
cartoons in Punch, he also contributed woodcuts to the
Illustrated London News (1856) and Once a Week (1859 –
62).
Leech has, in addition, illustrated several books,
including Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol and the
sporting novels of Robert Smith Surtees. He was, as well,
the author of several lithographed series, particularly
Portraits of the Children of the Mobility (1841).
