Andre Gill nasceu em França em 1840.
Ele começou a publicar em Le Journal Amusant, mas
tornou-se famoso graças a uma série de retratos feitos
para o La Lune, intitulados “O Homem do Dia”. As
suas caricaturas eram excepcionalmente precisas e como não
eram cruéis, as pessoas famosas queriam ser desenhadas por
ele. Júlio Verne foi um desses. Ainda assim, o Imperador
Napoleão não gostou do seu retrato e, em 1868, o jornal
foi banido. Gill permaneceu activo na Comuna de Paris e
durante o conflicto trabalhou para o jornal socialista:
La Rue.

Andre Gill was born in France in 1840.
He started on the Le Journal Amusant, however, he became famous with a
series of portraits for La Lune, entitled “The Man of the Day”. His
caricatures were exceptionally accurate and as they were not cruel, famous
people wanted to be drawn by him; Jules Verne, for instance. Still, Emperor
Napoleon disliked his portrait and in 1868 the journal was banned. Gill was
active in the Paris Commune and during the conflict worked for the socialist
paper, La Rue.
Andre Gill died in 1885.
